Mathematics

Mathematics is a vehicle essential for many areas of one's living experience. The course offerings provide an opportunity for students to explore, develop and investigate avenues ranging from practical to theoretical for both daily living and college preparation. Calculators and computers are used as resources.

Consumer Math
1 Credit

This course enlarges upon the skills necessary for real life applications. While non-college preparatory, the topics are diverse, including finances, taxation, and purchasing.

Pre-Algebra
1 Credit

Pre-Algebra is available for students with the need for extra assistance in mathematics. While Pre-Algebra is non-college preparatory, a student may later enter the College Prep program. Topics in Pre-Algebra are designed for both the terminal student and for those who will later take Algebra I. Emphasis in the course is on the four operations of arithmetic, and are applied to fractions, decimals, and percentage problems through applications to home and business finances. The English-Metric systems and introductions to geometry and algebra are also included.

Algebra 1
1 Credit

Prerequisite - Pre-Algebra or equivalent and placement exam

Algebra is a branch of mathematics that enables students to solve unknown quantities by knowing the basic patterns of arithmetic forms and manipulations. Students must be able to understand the symbolism used to express abstract concepts. Algebra I is a prerequisite for not only Algebra II and Advanced Math, but also for Chemistry and Physics. Topics include negative numbers, factoring, fractional equations, linear equations, word problems, radicals, exponents and graphing.

Algebra 2
1 Credit

Prerequisite - a minimum grade of C in Algebra I

Second year Algebra provides a deeper study of the fundamentals covered in Algebra I. It is essential for those students who plan to pursue further study in mathematics. Topics include polynomials, coordinate geometry, functions, quadratics, systems of equations, matrices, graphing, exponents, logarithm, conics and an introduction to the circular functions.

Geometry
1 Credit

Prerequisite - a minimum grade of C in Algebra I

Designed to assist students to reason from cause to effect, the course covers the basic ideas of Euclidean Geometry, with the main emphasis being on proof and logical reasoning. Plane figures such as lines, angles, polygons and circles are highly utilized. Transformations, trigonometry of the right triangle, and an introduction to space geometry are also included in the course.

Pre-Calculus
1 Credit

Prerequisite - a minimum grade of C in both Algebra II and Geometry

A course for serious math and science students taken as a preparation for college math, particularly Calculus. The concept of a function, used throughout the course is applied to such topics as circular functions, algebraic functions, exponential functions, and logarithmic functions. The function is further developed in series, limits, and an introduction of Calculus. Other features include vectors, three dimensional coordinate systems and conics. The graphing calculator is used extensively.
